The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) supported the authorities in the Tulcea County in Romania in an important operation to prevent and combat the trafficking of toxic products. The operation led to the seizure of 353 litres of insecticide valued at around €100,000. Whilst the investigation remains ongoing, two individuals were arrested on suspicion of trafficking in toxic products and violations of trademark regulations.

OLAF worked closely with the Tulcea County Police Inspectorate for Economic Crime Investigations, the Criminal Investigation Service, the Forensic Service and the SAS fighters. Throughout the operation OLAF provided valuable intelligence and coordinated the activities, delivering the key elements to the successful seizure.

The illicit trafficking of pesticides poses a threat throughout the food chain, from farmers to consumers, because it allows dangerous products to reach the European market and subsequently pose a real threat to our soils. OLAF, together with its national and European partners, is active in cross-border operations that lead to a more environmentally friendly Europe. OLAF contributes its expertise and resources to enhance the enforcement capacity and to strengthen the operational activities of its partners.
