OLAF hosts Syria Investigations Working Group (SIWG)

09/11/2018

On 7-8 November, OLAF hosted the Syria Investigations Working Group in Brussels. The Working Group brings together international agencies and organisations working to prevent and put an end to fraud involving humanitarian aid granted in the context of the Syrian crisis.

For development aid to make a difference on the ground and bring relief to those in need, it is crucial that funding reaches end beneficiaries and does not end up in the pockets of fraudsters. As the EU has mobilised over EUR 10 billion for assistance to Syrians, both in their home country and for refugees and their host communities in neighbouring countries, OLAF has a key role to play in investigating potential fraud in this field. International cooperation among donor organisations is key in identifying and deterring fraudulent practices.

For this edition of the Working Group, in close partnership with USAID, Office of Inspector General, OLAF organised a platform for the exchange of operational information and investigative best practice between over twenty participating agencies and organisations.
