The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) is participating today in an International Anti-Corruption Conference, organized by the Ukrainian government, entitled "Preventing, fighting, acting" in Kyiv. The aim of the event is to review the progress on preventing and combating corruption that Ukraine has made during the last eighteen months and to set anti-corruption goals for the next year. Guest speakers will be President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, Prime Minister, Arseniy Yatseniuk and Director-General of OLAF, Mr Giovanni Kessler. The conference will gather 600 participants, including anti-corruption practitioners, from Ukraine and abroad.

It can be seen as the biggest and most important international anti-corruption event held in Ukraine after the fall of the Yanukovych regime. The conference aims to provide a platform for a frank and open dialogue between the state, business and civil society and to bring the best international expertise from countries which have succeeded in preventing and fighting corruption. Additionally, its purpose is to support and motivate the newly created specialized anti-corruption state agencies in their operations, ensuring that they have all the necessary local and international support to do their jobs effectively. It is also an opportunity to inform society and international partners about the future of anti-corruption reforms in Ukraine. By participating, OLAF is showing its strengthened involvement in supporting the Ukrainian authorities in their fight against fraud and corruption.

The event, open to the press, will start with a session "Making Ukraine a Success Story", moderated by a Ukrainian radio and TV journalist. The programme also includes sessions relating to corruption prevention, anti-corruption in sectoral and regional reforms and the link between corruption and business. OLAF's Director-General will bring his expertise to the session "Investigation of corruption cases and sanctions".

Background

OLAF supports Ukraine's fight against fraud and corruption and is actively involved in building and consolidating effective anti-fraud and anti-corruption institutions. To this end, OLAF signed an Administrative Cooperation Agreement with the Ministry of Revenue and Duties of Ukraine in 2013 to facilitate anti-fraud cooperation. OLAF also has a liaison officer posted in Kyiv since 2011.
